INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Virginia Tech golf team has received an at-large bid to the 2013 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. The Hokies will compete May 16-18, 2013, as the fifth seed in the Pullman Regional at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash., hosted by Washington State University.

This will be the Hokies’ seventh consecutive NCAA appearance and their 15th all-time appearance in the NCAA Championship. Tech was the eighth seed in the Bowling Green Regional last season and finished fourth in the event at Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Ky. The Hokies advanced to the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship, played at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Tech finished 24th at the nationals.

“We look forward to representing Virginia Tech in the NCAA Championship and we do so with great pride,” head coach Jay Hardwick said. “This bid is a testament to the hard work and dedication this team has shown throughout the season. It is also an indication of the strength of golf in the ACC that nine teams were selected for postseason play again this year."

The Pullman Regional field should be the strongest of the six regions. It is led by No. 1 national seed California and also features No. 11 TCU, No. 12 USC and No. 24 St. Mary’s. There are five West Coast schools and three schools from Texas in the field. Memphis, the 11th seed in Pullman, competed against Virginia Tech in Bowling Green last season and advanced to Los Angeles, as well. North Texas, the seventh seed in Pullman, finished seventh in the Bowling Green Regional last season.

Virginia Tech won three events this season and finished in the top eight of all of its 11 events this season, including nine top-five finishes. Tech tied for second at the 60th Annual ACC Men’s Golf Championship last week and senior Mikey Moyers tied for second individually. The Hokies enter the regionals ranked 25th nationally by Golfstat.com and 35th nationally by the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. Virginia Tech is one of nine Atlantic Coast Conference teams in the regionals and the only ACC team competing in Pullman.

California is the No. 1 seed in Pullman, followed by TCU, Southern California, St. Mary’s and the Hokies. There are six regional sites. Three sites, including Pullman, have 14 teams and five individuals, while the other three sites have 13 teams and 10 individuals. The top five teams from each site advance to the NCAA Championship, along with the low individual from each site not on an advancing team. The championship rounds will be played at the Capital City Club-Crabapple Course, outside of Atlanta. The championship is hosted by Georgia Tech and will be played May 28-June 2.
