NEW LONDON, N.C. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot an opening round six-under-par 282 on Friday and is tied with Duke for second place after the first round of the 60th Annual ACC Men’s Golf Championship. The event is being played at the par-72, 7,102-yard Old North State Club in New London, N.C.

Senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) shot a four-under-par 68 and is tied for third place individually. He trails leader Daniel Berger of Florida State by three strokes. Moyers made the turn at plus-one, but carded five birdies on the back nine for his 68, including a birdie on the 568-yard, par-5 No. 18.

Freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) and sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) each shot a one-under-par 71 and are tied for 12th place. Sophomore Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) shot even-par 72 and its tied for 19th place and junior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) shot two-over-par 74 and is tied for 29th place.

Florida State shot 17-under-par 271 and leads the Hokies and Blue Devils by 11 strokes. Georgia Tech is fourth at 284, Wake Forest is fifth at 286, Virginia is sixth at 287 and North Carolina is seventh at 292. NC State is eighth at 294, Clemson is ninth at 296, Maryland is 10th at 298 and Boston College is 11th at 308.

Eight of the 11 teams in the championship are ranked in the top 50 in the Golfstat.com rankings. Georgia Tech is ranked seventh and Duke is ranked ninth coming into the event. The Hokies are ranked 31st nationally in the poll.

The second round will begin on Saturday morning. The teams will be grouped by the first round finishes. The Hokies will play in the final group of the round, along with Florida State and Duke, beginning at 11:10 a.m.
