ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot an opening round 12-over-par 296 on Saturday and is tied with Wake Forest for third place at the Navy Spring Invitational. The event is being played at the 6,611-yard, par-71 Naval Academy Golf Club in Annapolis, Md.

Sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) is tied for third place overall with an even-par 71, one stroke behind co-leaders Mac McLaughlin of Virginia and Evan Beck of Wake Forest. Vincent .

The trio of senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.), junior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) and freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) are tied for 16th overall after each shot a 75 on Saturday. Sophomore Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) is tied for 29th place at 76.

Host Navy and Virginia are tied for the lead at 10-over-par 294, two strokes ahead of the Hokies and Demon Deacons. Pennsylvania is fifth at 298, LIU is sixth at 300, George Washington is seventh at 301, Bucknell is eight at 304, Towson is ninth at 305 and Delaware is 10th at 306. In all, 19 schools are competing in the event.

This is a rare 36-hole event, as the competing teams played 18 holes on Saturday and will play 18 holes on Sunday. The Naval Academy Golf Club is currently ranked No. 19 in Golfweek’s “Best Campus Courses”. The same poll places The Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech at No. 8. The NAGC is a William S. Flynn design and has a rating of 71.7 and a slope rating of 128. Flynn also designed the Cascades Course at the Homestead Resort, where the Hokies hosted the 2004 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship.

There are no live stats for the event. This is the Hokies’ final tournament before the ACC Men’s Golf Championship, beginning Friday at the Old North State Club in Badin Lake, N.C.
