Augusta, Ga. – The Virginia Tech golf team posted a 54-hole total of four-over-par 868 and finished in fourth place at the Insperity/Augusta State Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The two-day event was played at the par-72, 7,142-yard Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.

Tech shot a seven-over-par 295 in Saturday’s first round and followed that with a one-over-par 289 in the afternoon’s second round. On Sunday, the Hokies fired a four-under-par 284 for the 868 total. Tech’s 284 on Sunday was the best round of the third round and the third-best round of the 45 team rounds posted in the event. The Hokies have now posted seven top five finishes in nine events so far this season, including three top fives in the four spring events to date.

Senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) tied for eighth place individually with a three-round total of two-under-par 214. He finished five strokes behind Sebastian Soderberg of Coastal Carolina, who defeated Greg Eaton of UCF in a fifth playoff hole for medalist honors.

Sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) tied for 17th place at 218 and junior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) tied for 19th at 219. Junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) tied for 33rd at 222 and freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) tied for 45th place at 225. Four of the five Hokies posted scores of par-or-better in Sunday’s final round, led by Huge’s three-under-par 69.

Defending national champion Texas won its second consecutive Insperity/Augusta State Invitational championship, with a three-round total of one-under-par 863, two strokes ahead of host Augusta State. Georgia was third at 866, two strokes ahead of the Hokies. South Carolina was fifth at 872, Tennessee was sixth at 878 and Clemson and Houston tied for seventh at 880. Purdue was ninth at 883, UCF and Coastal Carolina tied for 10th at 887 and Illinois was 12th at 888. Baylor was 13th at 891, SMU was 14th at 895 and USC-Aiken, which is ranked No. 3 in the Division II poll, finished in 15th place at 899.

This year’s field was one of the strongest in collegiate golf this season, with 11 top 40 teams in the tournament. The three teams that finished ahead of the Hokes in the event have won four of the last eight NCAA titles.

The Hokies will complete the 2012-13 regular season on April 20-21 at the Navy Spring Invitational at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club in Annapolis, Md. The 2013 ACC Men’s Golf Championship will be played April 26-28 at the Old North State Club in Badin Lake, N.C.
