Augusta, Ga. – The Virginia Tech golf team posted a two-round total of eight-over-par 584 and is in sixth place after the first day of the Insperity/Augusta State Invitational on Saturday. The two-day event is being played at the par-72, 7,142-yard Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.

Tech shot a seven-over-par 295 in Saturday’s first round and followed that with a one-over-par 289 in the afternoon’s second round. Tech’s 289 was the fourth-best round of the second round and the sixth-best round of the 30 team rounds carded on the first day of the event.

Senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) is tied for seventh place individually with a two-round total of two-under-par 142. He shot a 73 in the morning round, but improved with a three-under-par 69 in the afternoon round. A group of four players are tied for the lead at four-under-par 140, two strokes ahead of Moyers. Moyers carded 11 birdies in the first two rounds, tied for the most on the day.

A pair of Hokies, junior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) and sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) are tied for 23rd place at 147. Junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) is tied for 28th at 148 and freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) is tied for 69th place at 156.

Host Augusta State leads the event entering the final round with an even-par total of 576, two strokes ahead of defending tournament and national champion Texas. Georgia is third at 580 and Clemson and South Carolina are tied for fourth at 583, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Houston and Tennessee are tied for seventh at 588, Coastal Carolina is ninth at 592, Purdue is 10th at 593 and UCF is 11th at 598. Baylor is 12th at 600, Illinois is 13th at 601, USC-Aiken 14th at 603 and SMU is 15th at 604.

This year’s field is one of the strongest in collegiate golf this season. Defending national champion Texas headlines the field, that includes two-time national champion (2010 and 2011) host Augusta State. In all, teams that have won five of the last 10 national championships are competing at ASU. The Longhorns are also the defending champions of this event.

The final round will be played Sunday morning. The Hokies will be grouped with Clemson and South Carolina and will tee-off beginning at 9:20 a.m. from the first tee. Live stats will be on hokiesports.com and golfstatresults.com.
