Hokies tie for second at Mission Inn

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot a three-round total of seven-over-par 871and tied Purdue for second place in the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular on Sunday. The tournament was played on the Las Colinas Course of the Mission Inn Resort and Spa in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., this weekend.

The Hokies shot rounds of 294 and 295 in Saturday’s opening rounds. Tech then fired a four-under-par 284 in Sunday’s final round to finish in a tie with the Boilermakers. The Hokies’ 284 on Sunday was the low round of the tournament.

Sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot a three-round total of two-under-par 214 and finished in third place individually. Vincent’s 214 was six strokes behind medalist Jonathan Grey of Georgia State. Vincent shot a final-round two-under-par 70 on Sunday.

Sophomore Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) finished in seventh place at one-over-par 217. Junior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) and senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) tied for 16th at 222 and freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) tied for 41st at 227. All five Virginia Tech golfers shot no worse than three-over-par in the final two rounds. Four of the five Hokies shot par-or-better on Sunday.

Indiana won the tournament with a five-over-par 869, two strokes ahead of Purdue and the Hokies. Georgia State was fourth at 875, Old Dominion was fifth at 887, Florida Atlantic and Appalachian State tied for sixth at 895 and Murray State was eighth at 908. Towson was ninth at 916, Hartford was 10th at 917, Marquette was 11th at 918 and Morehead State and Connecticut tied for 12th at 929. Western Illinois was 14th at 931, Stetson was 15th at 932, host George Mason was 16th at 934, Northern Illinois was 17th at 935 and Rutgers was 18th at 958.

The Hokies return to action on Friday, as they will participate in the Furman Intercollegiate at the Furman University Golf Course on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
