SAN JUAN, P.R. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot a three-round total of two-over-par 866 and finished in seventh place at the 2013 Puerto Rico Classic. The event was played at the 6,902-yard, par-72 Rio Mar Country Club’s River Course near San Juan, Puerto Rico, Sunday through Tuesday. The Hokies shot an opening round four-over-par 292, followed that on Monday with an even-par 288 and completed the event on Tuesday with a two-under-par 286 for the 866 total.

Senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) and sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) finished with seven-under-par 209 and tied for fifth place overall. The Tech duo finished five strokes behind Albin Choi of NC State. Vincent shot a six-under-par 66 in the final round, the Hokies’ best round of the tournament.

Junior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) tied for 28th place at 217. Sophomore Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) and freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) tied for 68th place at 232.

Alabama won the event with a three-day total of 14-under-par 831, seven strokes ahead of Oklahoma and 17 strokes ahead of SMU. Georgia was fourth at 852, Georgia Tech was fifth at 858 and Northwestern was sixth at 863, three strokes ahead of the Hokies. Clemson was eighth at 867, NC State was ninth at 875, Augusta State was 10th at 876 and East Tennessee State was 11th at 883. North Carolina finished 12th at 887, Ohio State was 13th at 888, host Purdue was 14th at 897 and Michigan was 15th at 906.

The event, which annually boasts one of the top fields in collegiate golf, had three of the top 10 teams in the current Golfstat.com poll, led by No. 6 Alabama. Five top 25 and eight top 50 programs competed at Rio Mar. The Hokies entered the spring ranked No. 52 in the Golfstat.com poll and No. 53 in the Golfweek/Sagarin poll.

The Hokies will return to action on March 16 and 17, as they travel to Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., to compete in the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular.
