SAN JUAN, P.R. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot an opening round four-over-par 292 on Sunday and is tied for eighth place with Augusta State at the 2013 Puerto Rico Classic. The event is being played at the 6,902-yard, par-72 Rio Mar Country Club’s River Course near San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) shot a two-under-par 70 and is tied for tenth place overall. He is three strokes behind first round leader Billy Kennerly of Clemson.

Sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot a 73 and is tied for 28th place and fellow sophomore Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) is tied for 36th place at 74. Junior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) and freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) each shot a 75 on Sunday and are tied for 44th place.

Alabama leads the tournament after the first round at nine-under-par 279, a stroke ahead of Oklahoma and two strokes ahead of Clemson. Georgia Tech is fourth at 286, SMU is fifth at 287 and Georgia is sixth at 290. North Carolina is in seventh place at 291, one stroke ahead of the Hokies and Jaguars. East Tennessee State is 10th at 296, Northwestern is 11th at 297 and Michigan is 12th at 298. North Carolina State is 13th at 303, Ohio State is 14th at 304 and host Purdue is 15th at 308.

The Hokies will tee off in round 2, beginning at 8 a.m. on Monday morning, grouped with North Carolina and Augusta State. Live scoring will be available on hokiesports.com and Golfstat.com.
