
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech golf team will open its Spring 2012 schedule of tournaments on Sunday at the 2013 Puerto Rico Classic men’s golf tournament, to be played in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico The event will be played Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at the 6,902-yard, par-72 Rio Mar Country Club’s River Course.
The event, which annually boasts one of the top fields in collegiate golf, has three of the top 10 teams in the current Golfstat.com poll, led by No. 6 Alabama. Five top 25 and eight top 50 programs are competing. The Hokies enter the spring ranked No. 52 in the Golfstat.com poll and No. 53 in the Golfweek/Sagarin poll.
Sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) will play in the first position for the Hokies in Puerto Rico. He led the Hokies in stroke average in the fall, at 71.33. He missed one fall event while playing on the Zimbabwe team in the World Team Amateur Championship in Turkey.
Senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) is in the second position. The lone senior in the line-up, Moyers was second in stroke average in the fall, at 72.33. Sophomore Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) is in the third position, after shooting a 73.00 in the fall. Junior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) is playing fourth after a 73.27 stroke average in the fall and freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) makes his first trip to Puerto Rico in the fifth position, after shooting 74.33 in the fall for the Hokies.
The teams will play a practice round on Saturday and play begins Sunday morning. Live scoring will be available on hokiesports.com and Golfstat.com.
