BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech golf program has announced that Drew Johnson and Ryan Mondy have signed national letters of intent to attend Virginia Tech and play golf for the Hokies in Fall 2013.

Johnson, from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, attends Northwest Guilford High School. He received the 2010 President’s Leadership Award from the American Junior Golf Association and United States Golf Association for his work with the Special Olympics, which included more than 1,000 hours of service as well as organizing a fundraiser for the Greensboro, North Carolina Special Olympics golf team. A three-time All-State selection and Piedmont Triad 4A Conference medalist, he has also been named Conference Player of the Year twice. Earlier this summer he recorded top-five finishes at the AJGA Golf Pride Junior Classic and AJGA Junior at River Landing and was an alternate for the 2012 US Amateur at Cherry Hills.

“Drew brings to our program a proven record of success on the national level and I believe he has the tools to be an outstanding college player,” said Virginia Tech head coach Jay Hardwick. “He has been a tireless worker in his community and is the type of individual that we look for in our program.”

Mondy, a local standout from Blacksburg, Virginia, attends Blacksburg High School. An All-State selection 2010 and 2011, he won the VHSL Group AA State Golf Championship in October, which included a final round five-under-par 67. The past two years he has represented Virginia in the Virginia/Carolinas Junior Matches as well as the Mid-Atlantic Junior Invitational, leading the Virginia team to the 2012 championship while capturing medalist honors. The 2011 Alleghany Amateur and Bobby Bowers Memorial champion also has numerous high finishes on the AJGA circuit. He finished ninth in the prestigious Scott Robertson Invitational in 2011 and has been named All-Timesland, All-District and the Roanoke Valley Hall of Fame Player of the Year during his high school and junior career.

“Ryan comes from a very successful Blacksburg program so he knows what it takes to be a winner,” said Hardwick. “His victories in top events the past two seasons are indicative of the talent he possesses. Ryan’s experience, combined with his academic achievements, should ensure him of a very bright future at Virginia Tech.”
