
JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot an opening round one-over-par 289 and is tied with Army and UNC Wilmington for seventh place at the 2012 Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club at the par 72, 7,147-yard Blackthorn Club on Friday.
Senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) shot a one-under-par 71 and is tied for 12th place individually. He trails co-leaders Rick Lamb of Tennessee and Grant Milner of Memphis by four strokes.
Sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) is tied for 22nd place at even-par 72 and junior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) and freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) are tied for 39th at 73. Sophomore Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) shot 75 and is tied for 54th place.
Two Hokies are playing this event as individuals. Sophomore Miles Curley (Rock Hill, S.C.) is tied for 50th with a 74 and redshirt junior Marc MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) is in 73rd place with an 82.
Tennessee and Memphis are tied for the lead after the first day with an eight-under-par 280, four strokes ahead of Virginia. Wake Forest and Missouri are tied for fourth at 285 and host East Tennessee State is in sixth place at 286, three strokes ahead of the Hokies, Black Knights and Seahawks. Coastal Carolina is 10th at 291, Penn State is 11th at 294, Pepperdine is 12th at 295 and Furman is 13th at 302.
Tech entered the event ranked 39th in the Golfstat.com rankings and 40th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Vincent is ranked 80th in the Golfstat.com individual rankings and 88th individually in Golfweek/Sagarin.
The Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club boasts a field that includes five top 50 teams, according to Golfstat.com, including No. 12 Missouri. Other top 50 teams in the field include No. 21 Wake Forest, No. 31 Tennessee and No. 37 Coastal Carolina, along with the Hokies. Other teams competing in the event are host East Tennessee State, Army, Furman, Memphis, Penn State, Pepperdine, UNC Wilmington and Virginia. This will mark the first meeting of the year for the Hokies and ACC foes Wake Forest and Virginia.
