MACON, Ga.-- Virginia Tech shot a three-round total of three-over-par 867 and tied Chattanooga for fourth place at the Sixth Annual Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship at the par 72, 7,128-yard Brickyard at Riverside on Sunday.
The Hokies opened with a 291 on Friday and shot 286 in Saturday’s second round, before shooting a two-over-par 290 in Sunday’s final round. Tech’s 286 on Saturday was one of only two rounds under-par in the second round, both 286.
Sophomore Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) finished in a tie for sixth place with a three-day total of four-under-par 212. He finished four strokes behind co-medalists Jonathan Gray of Georgia State and Sam Straka of Georgia. Cone shot a one-under-par 71 in Sunday’s final round. Straka shot a course record 64 on Sunday.
Senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) finished tied for 17th place with a total of 216 and freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) tied for 25th place at 219. Junior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) ted for 35th place at 221 and redshirt junior Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.) tied for 77th place at 234.
Georgia led wire-to-wire to claim the team title with a score of 16-under-par 848, 14 strokes better than Georgia Tech. North Florida was third at 865, two strokes ahead of the Hokies and Mocs. Host Mercer was sixth at 872, Augusta State was seventh at 876, Oklahoma was eighth at 878, Colorado State was ninth at 882 and Kansas was 10th at 886. Georgia State and Princeton tied for 11th at 887, the College of Charleston was 13th at 891, South Florida was 14th at 894 and Air Force was 15th at 904.
Several of the top collegiate golfers missed the tournament due to the World Amateur Team Championship in Turkey. Tech played without sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe), who finished 32nd and led his native Zimbabwe to a tie for 17th place. Vincent leads the Hokies in scoring average this season and had placed in the top 5 of both tournaments so far this season. Chattanooga was without U.S. Amateur champion Stephen Fox, who played for the United States and North Florida was without Kevin Phelan, who was playing for Ireland.
The Hokies will return to action this coming weekend, as they travel to Johnson City, Tenn., to compete in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Blackthorn Club. The three-day event begins on Friday and runs through Sunday. Vincent is expected back in the Hokies’ line-up for that event.
