MACON, Ga. – Virginia Tech shot an opening round three-over-par 291 and is tied with Chattanooga for sixth place in the Sixth Annual Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship at the par 72, 7,128-yard Brickyard at Riverside on Friday.

Sophomore Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) is tied for second place individually after shooting a three-under-par 69 on Friday. He trails leader Nicholas Roach of Georgia by one stroke.

Junior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) is tied for 12th place with a one-under-par 71 and freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) is tied for 45th place at 75. Redshirt junior Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.) is tied for 53rd place with a 76 and senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) is tied for 58th place with a 77.

Georgia holds the lead after the first round, shooting an eight-under-par 280, three strokes ahead of North Florida. Princeton is third at 286, Kansas is fourth at 288 and Georgia Tech is fifth at 289, two strokes ahead of the Hokies and Mocs. Colorado State is eighth at 293, Augusta State is ninth at 295 and host Mercer is 10th at 296. Oklahoma is 11th at 299, South Florida is 12th at 300, Georgia State and the College of Charleston are tied for 13th at 301 and Air Force is 15th at 312.

Several of the top collegiate golfers are missing this event due to the World Amateur Team Championship in Turkey. Tech is playing without sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe), who is competing for his native Zimbabwe. Vincent leads the Hokies in scoring average this season and has placed in the top 5 of both tournaments so far this season. Chattanooga is without U.S. Amateur champion Stephen Fox, who is playing for the United States and North Florida is without Kevin Phelan, who is playing for Ireland.

The Hokies will tee-off in the first group of the day, beginning at 8:30 a.m. from the first hole at the Brickyard on Saturday morning. They will be grouped with Augusta State and Colorado State.

This event, through the Brickyard Collegiate Foundation, has provided financial support of over $50,000 to Macon Golf for Kids, a local organization which introduces golf to underserved children in the Macon area.
