Hokies look to continue fast start at the Brickyard
Tech will play without leading scorer Vincent

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech golf team travels to Macon, Ga., to compete in the Sixth Annual Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship at the par 72, 7,128-yard Brickyard at Riverside on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Hokies enter the Brickyard Collegiate having won both of their first two events this season. Tech won the Marshall Invitational by 16 strokes and followed that with a nine-stroke victory at the VCU Shootout. This marks the first time since the Fall of 2007 that the Hokies have won two events in the same season.

Tech will be without sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe), who is competing for his native Zimbabwe in the World Amateur Team Championship in Antalya, Turkey. Vincent leads the Hokies in scoring average this season and has placed in the top 5 of both tournaments so far this season.

Senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) will play in the first spot this week. Moyers tied for fifth with Vincent at the VCU Shootout and tied for 10th at Marshall. He has played in every event since arriving at Virginia Tech in the Fall of 2008. Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) will play in the second spot for the Hokies. He played in every event for Virginia Tech as a freshman and was the team’s leading scorer last season. He finished in sixth place in the Marshall Invitational earlier this month.

Freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) will move up to the third position for Tech. He posted a top 20 finish at Marshall, tying for 19th overall in his first collegiate event and followed that with an 11th place finish at VCU. Huge competed in the 2012 U.S. Amateur this summer at Cherry Hill in Denver. Junior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) will play in the fourth position for the Hokies. He played in every event for the Hokies last season and tied with Moyers for 10th place at the Marshall Invitational.

Redshirt junior Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.) will join the starting line-up for the Hokies this week and play No. 5. He played as an individual in the Marshall Invitational and the VCU Shootout, where he finished tied for 22nd place overall.

As is the norm, the Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship has attracted a top-notch field, highlighted by last year’s team champion Georgia Tech and 2010 and 2011 NCAA Champion, Augusta State. Also in the 15-team field, along with the Hokies and the host Bears of Mercer are Georgia, Princeton, North Florida, Chattanooga, Colorado State, South Florida, Oklahoma, Georgia State, Air Force, Kansas and the College of Charleston.

Tech will play a practice round on Thursday. The tournament will begin on Friday morning, with a second round to follow on Saturday. The final round will take place on Sunday. Live stats are available at www.golfstatresults.com.

This event, through the Brickyard Collegiate Foundation, has provided financial support of over $50,000 to Macon Golf for Kids, a local organization which introduces golf to underserved children in the Macon area.
