MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. – The Virginia Tech golf team finished with a three-round total of 14-over-par 878 and won the VCU Shootout at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va., on Tuesday. The event was played on the par 72, 6,955-yard Manakin course.

With the victory, the Hokies have opened the 2012-13 season with a pair of tournament titles. This marks the first time since the 2007-08 season that the Hokies have won two tournaments in the same season. In the fall of 2007, the Hokies posted victories at The Bank of Tennessee at the Ridges and at the Landfall Tradition.

At the VCU Shootout, Tech shot a 292 and 295 in the first two rounds on Monday, before finishing with a three-over-par 291 on Tuesday. That was the best score posted in the final round.

Sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) and senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) each finished tied for fifth place, with a total of one-over-par, 217. They were five strokes behind medalist Sean Bosdosh of Maryland. Moyers shot a four-under-par 68 in the final round, the low score of the tournament.

Freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) finished with a total of 221 and tied for 11th place. Freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) shot 227 and tied for 24th place and junior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) was tied for 29th place at 228.

Three Hokies played the event as individuals, led by redshirt junior Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.), who finished in a tie for 22nd place at 226. Sophomore Miles Curley (Rock Hill, S.C.) tied for 47th at 235, while redshirt junior Marc MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) tied for 68th place at 254.

The Hokies defeated Wichita State by nine strokes and outdistanced Long Beach State by 10 strokes. Maryland was fourth at 891, Iowa State was fifth at 894 and Richmond was sixth at 904. East Carolina was seventh at 908, host VCU was eighth at 920 and UNCG, ODU and George Mason tied for ninth at 922. James Madison finished 12th at 952.

There were a total of five eagles in the tournament and two were recorded by Hokies. Huge made a two on the 333-yard, par 4 No. 6 in the second round, when he drove the green and Vincent had a three on the 562-yard, par 5 No. 17 hole in the final round. Moyers tied for the lead in Par 4 scoring in the event, averaging 3.93 on the par 4s.

The Hokies return to action on Oct. 5-7, as they will compete in the Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship at the Brickyard at Riverside in Macon, Ga.
