HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Virginia Tech opened the 2012-13 schedule with an impressive 17 stroke victory at the Marshall Invitational on Tuesday. The tournament was played at the 6,523-yard, par 71 Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, W. Va.

Tech took a 16 stroke lead into Tuesday’s final round and shot a four-over-par 288. Tech finished the event with a three-round total of 16-under-par 836. The Hokies shot 277 in the opening round on Monday and followed that with a tournament-record 271 in the afternoon round on Monday.

The victory was the Hokies’ first tournament title since winning the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in March of 2010. Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) led the Hokies with a second place finish in that event. That event was played on the 7,009-yard, par 72 Pinehurst No. 8 Centinnial Course at the Pinehurst Resort.

All five Hokies finished in the top 20 individually. Sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) led Tech with a three-round total of six-under-par 207, tying for third place overall. He finished three strokes behind medalist Korey Ward of Xavier. Vincent’s 68 on Tuesday was the Hokies’ low round of the day.

Fellow sophomore Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) finished sixth overall with a total of five-under-par 208 and senior Moyers and junior Bryce Chalkley (Richomd, Va.) tied for 10th place at 212. Freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) tied for 19th place with a 216. Redshirt junior Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.) played the tournament as an individual and finished 82nd at 232.

Tech finished at 836, 17 strokes ahead of Ohio State and host Marshall. Ohio State was deemed the runner-up on a tie-breaker and Marshall was third. Miami of Ohio was fourth with a 862, Toledo and Western Kentucky tied for fifth at 865, Xavier and Wright State tied for seventh at 867, Cleveland State was ninth at 868 and Cincinnati was 10th at 871. Eastern Kentucky finished 11th at 873, William & Mary and Richmond tied for 12th at 877, Bowling Green was 14th at 878, Ohio was 15th at 883 and Dayton finished 16th at 884.

Eleven of Virginia Tech’s 15 rounds of the tournament were par-or-better, including eight rounds in the 60s. The Hokies return to action on Sept. 24 and 25, as they compete in the VCU Shootout, to be held at the Manakin Course at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va.
