
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Virginia Tech posted a tournament record second round 13-under-par 271 en route to a two round total of 16-under-par 548 at the Marshall Invitational on Monday. The tournament is being played at the 6,523-yard, par 71 Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, W. Va.
After the Hokies took a five-stroke lead with a 277 in the morning’s first round, Tech posted scores of 66, 68, 68, 69 and 69 in the afternoon’s second round. Of the 10 scores posted by the Hokies on Monday, only one was over par.
Senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) and sophomore Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) are tied for third place at five-under-par 137 entering the final round. They trail leader Korey Ward of Xavier by two strokes.
Junior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) is in seventh place at four-under-par 138 and sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) is tied for eighth place at 139. Freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.), making his collegiate debut, is tied for 12th place at 141. He carded the Hokies best round of the day, with a five-under-par 66 in the afternoon round. Redshirt junior Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.) is playing the tournament as an individual and his is tied for 85th place at 159.
The Hokies lead tournament host Marshall by 16 strokes and Ohio State by 17 strokes. Western Kentucky is fourth at 575, Xavier and Miami of Ohio are tied for fifth at 577. Toledo and Cleveland State are tied for eighth at 581 and Wright State is ninth at 582. Cincinnati is 10th at 583, William & Mary is 11th at 584, Dayton is 12th at 587, Richmond is 13th at 588, Eastern Kentucky and Bowling Green are tied for 14th at 589 and Ohio is 16th at 595.
The final round will tee off at 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
