PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot a 15-over-par 299 and is tied for 24^th place after the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship on Tuesday. The tournament is being played at the 7,292-yard, par-71 Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Ca.

Two Hokies, sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) and freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) each shot rounds of two-over-par 73 and are tied for 46^th place. Vincent and Chalkley are six strokes behind leader Anton Arboleda of UCLA.

Freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) is tied for 98^th place at 76 and sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) is tied for 122^nd place at 77. Senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) is tied for 146^th place after an opening round 80.

The Hokies are in a five-way tie for 24^th place, along with Chattanooga, TCU, Memphis and playing partner Lamar. No. 2 Alabama holds the lead after the first round with a one-over-par 285, three strokes ahead of Florida and Auburn. UCLA and Oklahoma are tied for fourth at 289 and Iowa, Florida State, North Florida, Texas and UCF round out the top 10, all tying for sixth place at 290.

The Hokies will tee off Wednesday, beginning at 2 p.m., from the 10^th hole, along with Tulsa and Lamar. The teams will be regrouped for the final round of stroke play on Thursday.
