Hokies improve to fifth at NCAA Regional

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Virginia Tech has a two-day total of seven-over-par 583 and is in fifth place entering the final round of the NCAA South Central Regional on Friday afternoon. The tournament, hosted by Western Kentucky University, is being played at the 7,248-yard, par 72 Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Ky.

Tech shot a nine-over-par 297 on Thursday and improved to a two-under-par 286 on Friday. Tech’s round of 286 was tied for the second-best round of the day.

Freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot a three-under-par 69 on Friday and is in third place overall at 139. He trails co-leaders Pedro Figueiredo of UCLA and Stephan Jaeger of Chattanooga by four strokes.

Junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) and sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) are tied for 31st place at 149. Senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) is tied for 34th at 150 and freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) is tied for 42nd at 152.

UCLA leads for the second day, with a total of 571, two strokes ahead of Texas A&M and four strokes ahead of Chattanooga. Memphis is fourth at 582, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Northwestern and Colorado State are tied for sixth at 587, Clemson is eighth at 590, Iowa State is ninth at 593 and North Texas and Arkansas are tied for 10th at 594. Jacksonville State is 12th at 613, Pennsylvania is 14th at 617 and Alabama State is 14th at 641.

The top five teams, plus the top individual on a team not advancing, will qualify for the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship, to be play May 29-June 3 at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Ca.
