BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Virginia Tech shot a nine-over-par 297 and is in eighth place following the first round of the NCAA South Central Regional on Thursday. The tournament, hosted by Western Kentucky University, is being played at the 7,248-yard, par 72 Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Ky.

Freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) is tied for fourth place individually following an opening round two-under-par 70. He trails co-leaders Jonathan Fly of Memphis and Pedro Figueiredo of UCLA by two strokes.

Senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) is tied for 11^th place following a 73 and freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) is tied for 35^th with a 75. Sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) is tied for 51st place with a 78 and junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) is tied for 59^th place following a 79 on Thursday.

UCLA is the only team under par, after shooting a four-under-par 284, 10 strokes ahead of Chattanooga and Colorado State. Clemson, Texas A&M, North Texas and Memphis are tied for fourth at 295, two strokes ahead of the Hokies. Northwestern is ninth at 301, Arkansas is 10^th at 302 and Iowa State is 11^th at 305. Jacksonville State is 12^th at 308, Pennsylvania is 13^th at 313 and Alabama State is 14^th at 319.

The tournament is slated for three rounds. The top five teams and the top individual not on an advancing team will advance to the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Cal., May 29 through June 3.
