Hokies seventh after first round at ACC Championship

NEW LONDON, N.C. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot an opening round of even-par 288 on Friday and is in seventh place after the first round of the 2012 ACC Men’s Golf Championship. The tournament is being played at the par-72, 7,102-yard Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point in New London, N.C.

Senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) shot a four-under-par 68 and is in seventh place individually. He is two strokes behind the trio of Daniel Berger of Florida State and teammates Bo Andrews and Ollie Schniederjans of Georgia Tech.

Freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot even-par 72 and is tied for 26th place. Junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) and sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) are tied for 34th at 74 and freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) shot a 76 and is tied for 47th place.

Three-time defending champion Georgia Tech holds the first round lead, after shooting an 18-under-par 270 on Friday. The Yellow Jackets lead Virginia by six stokes. Florida State is third at 279, North Carolina is fourth at 282 and Wake Forest is fifth at 285. Maryland and Clemson are tied for sixth at 287, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Duke is ninth at 289, North Carolina State is 10th at 291 and Boston College is 11th at 305.

The second round will be played Saturday morning and the final round will be played on Sunday. Live stats are available through a link on hokiesports.com.
