WALLACE, N.C. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot a three-round total of six-over-par 870 and finished in seventh place at the River Landing Intercollegiate on Saturday. The tournament was played at the par-72, 6,901-yard River Landing Golf Club in Wallace, N.C. The Hokies posted rounds of 294, 290 and 286 in the two-day event.
Junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) tied for 13th place at one-under-par 215. He finished seven strokes behind medalist Brinson Paolini of Duke.
Senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) finished tied for 28th at 218 and freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) tied for 30th at 219. Sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) tied for 38th place at 221 and freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) tied for 48th place at 224.
Liberty won the team title with a three-round total of 18-under-par 846, nine strokes ahead of NC State and Duke, which tied for second at 855. Co-host East Carolina and North Carolina tied for fourth at 859 and South Carolina was sixth at 869, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Maryland was eighth at 878, Winthrop was ninth at 880, VCU was 10th at 892, co-host UNC Wilmington was 11th at 906 and Jacksonville was 12th at 931.
The event, originally scheduled for 36 holes on Friday and 18 holes on Saturday, had to be altered to 27 holes each day following a two and one half hour rain delay before play began on Friday. Each team completed nine holes of their second round before darkness on Friday evening and finished the tournament on Saturday.
This was the Hokies’ final regular season event. Tech returns to action April 20-22, as they compete in the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championship, to be played at the Old North State Club in Baden Lake, N.C.
