AUGUSTA, GA. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot a three-round total of six-under-par 858 and tied with South Carolina for seventh place at the Insperity/Augusta State Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The tournament was played at the par-72, 7,143-yard Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., this weekend.
The Hokies shot a five-over-par 293 in Saturday morning’s first round and followed that with a four-under-par 284 in the afternoon, good for 10th place entering Sunday’s final round. On Sunday, the Hokies shot a seven-under-par 281 for the 858 total.
Senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) shot a four-under-par 68 on Sunday and finished in a tie for 14th place overall with a three-round total of five-under-par 211. He finished nine strokes behind medalist Julien Brun of TCU.
Freshmaan Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) shot a four-under-par 212 and tied for 18th place and freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) tied for 23rd place at 214. Sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) tied for 59th place at 221 and junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) tied for 74th place at 228.
Top-ranked Texas defeated host and two-time defending national champion Augusta State in a two-hole playoff to claim the team title at 26-under-par 828. The two schools entered the final round tied for the lead and each school shot nine-under-par 279 on Sunday. The Longhorns played the par-5 ninth hole two-under-par and ASU was one-under on that hole.
Illinois finished third at 846, Baylor and TCU tied for fourth at 852 and Tennessee finished sixth at 854, four strokes ahead of the Hokies and Gamecocks. Oklahoma State was ninth at 860, SMU and Coastal Carolina tied for 10th at 861 and Houston was 12 at 867. Clemson, the only other ACC team in the 16-team field, finished 13th ar 868, Lamar was 14th ar 871, Georgia State was 15th at 872 and USC-Aiken was 16th at 873.
The Hokies return to action on Friday and Saturday, as they play in the River Landing Intercollegiate. The 54-hole, two-day event will be played at the River Landing Golf Club in Wallace, N.C.
