BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech golf team will travel to Augusta, Ga., this weekend to compete in the Insperity/ASU Invitational. The tournament will be played at the par-72, 7,029-yard Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., Saturday and Sunday.
Junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) will play in the first position for Tech. Moyers tied for fourth at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate earlier this spring. He was second in scoring in the fall, at 73.71 strokes per round. Moyers has played in every event since coming to Virginia Tech and had his best finish of the fall at the season-opening Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms, where he placed third overall. Moyers tied for 25th in this event last season and the Hokies finished eighth in the team competition last season.
Freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) will play second for the Hokies at Augusta State. Cone led the Hokies in Puerto Rico, tying for fourth place and tied for seventh at the Furman Intercollegiate earlier this month. He led the team in scoring in the fall schedule.
Freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) is third for the Hokies. He was third in scoring in the fall and had two top 15 finishes in his first semester in Blacksburg and tied for 11th at the Furman Intercollegiate earlier in March. Sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) will play in the fourth position at Augusta State and senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) will play fifth for the Hokies. Redmond tied for seventh place, along with Cone, at the Hokies’ last event, the Furman Intercollegiate.
This 16-team event boasts one of the strongest fields in collegiate golf this season. Two-time defending national champion Augusta State is the tournament host and will be joined in the field by 2011 semifinalist Oklahoma State, top-ranked Texas, No. 14 Clemson and No. 31 Baylor. The Hokies are ranked 47th in the Golfstat.com rankings and 55th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. 14 of the 16 teams are ranked in the top 80, plus USC-Aiken is ranked 15th in Division II by Golfstat.com.
Oklahoma State is the defending champion after posting a winning total of 16-under 848 in 2011. The Cowboys finished one stroke in front of Tennessee. Cowboys’ senior Kevin Tway matched a single-round tournament record when he opened with an 8-under 64 and claimed a five-shot individual victory last season over Augusta State’s senior Olle Bengtsson.
Tournament play gets underway Saturday, March 31 beginning with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start. Teams will play the first two rounds on Saturday, with Sunday’s third and final round slated for tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m., off No. 1 and No. 10. The Hokies will be matched with Clemson, Oklahoma State and Baylor on Saturday.
