GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Virginia Tech golf team shot a three-round total of 11-under-par 853 and finished in second place at the 43rd Annual Furman Intercollegiate on Sunday. The event was played on the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C.
The Hokies recorded rounds of 294, 278 and 281 in posting their most-impressive finish of the season. Tech’s second-round 278 was the second-best round of the day and its third round score of 281 was the second-best round of Sunday.
Senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) and freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) each shot a four-under-par 212 and tied for seventh place. They finished eight strokes behind medalist Sebastian Soderberg of Coastal Carolina.
Freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) tied for 11th place at 213. Sophomore Bryce Chalkley tied for 29th place at 218 and junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) tied for 57th at 223. Vincent and Chalkley each shot three-under-par 69 on Sunday. Tech’s high round of the day was a one-over-par 73.
Three Hokies played the tournament as individuals. Redshirt sophomore Marc MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot a 217 and tied for 25th. Redshirt sophomore Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.) tied for 76th place at 227 and freshman Miles Curley (Fort Mill, S.C.) tied for 102nd at 230. MacDonald finished second among the 21 players playing as individuals.
The only team to post better scores on Saturday and Sunday than the Hokies was Clemson, which won the event with a score of 26-under-par 838, 15 strokes better than Tech. This is the Tigers’ third-straight team title at Furman and the 838 is a new 54-hole Furman Intercollegiate record.
Wofford and Coastal Carolina tied for third at 860, Georgia, Troy and Charleston Southern tied for fifth at 867 and Samford was eighth at 868. Georgia State was ninth at 875. Purdue was 10th at 877, Francis Marion and Marshall tied for 11th at 880, host Furman was 13th at 885 and East Tennessee State was 14th at 886. Gardner-Webb was 15th at 887, Michigan was 16th at 889, Presbyterian and Elon tied for 17th at 894, Winthrop was 19th at 896, Western Carolina was 20th at 904 and Temple was 21st at 952.
The Hokies will return to action on Saturday, March 31 and Sunday April 1, as they will join one of the nation’s top fields in the Insperity/Augusta State Invitational at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
