GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Virginia Tech golf team shot a 10-under-par 278 on Saturday and jumped up into second place with a two-day total of four-under-par 572 at the 43rd Annual Furman Intercollegiate. The event is being played on the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C.
The Hokies entered the day in a four-way tie for 10th place after a six-over-par 294 on Friday. Tech’s second-round 278 was the second-best round of the day.
Senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) shot a five-under-par 67 on Saturday and moved into a tie for third place overall. He has a two-day total of four-under-par 140 and trails leader Matt Thompson of Michigan by five strokes entering the final round on Sunday.
Freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) also shot a 67 on Saturday and is tied for seventh place at 141 and freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) is tied for 21st place at 144. Sophomore Bryce Chalkley is tied for 66th place at 149 and junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) is tied for 71st at 150.
Three Hokies are playing the tournament as individuals. Redshirt sophomore Marc MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot a one-under-par 71 on Saturday and is tied for 13th place at 143. Redshirt sophomore Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.) is tied for 80th place at 152 after an even-pat 72 in the second round and freshman Miles Curley (Fort Mill, S.C.) is tied for 110th at 156. MacDonald’s 143 is tied for the low score among individual competitors in the event.
The only team to post a better score on Saturday than the Hokies was Clemson, which shot a 12-under-par 276 and has a two-day total of 566, six strokes ahead of Tech. Georgia State is third at 576, Coastal Carolina is fourth at 577, Wofford is fifth at 578 and Georgia is sixth at 579. Charleston Southern is seventh at 580, day-one leader Troy fell to eighth at 581, Gardner-Webb is ninth at 582 and Purdue and Francis Marion are tied for 10th at 583. Host Furman, along with Samford and Marshall are tied for 12th at 586, East Tennessee State is 15th at 588 and Western Carolina is 16th at 589. Michigan is 17th at 590, Presbyterian and Elon are tied for 18th at 594, Winthrop is 20th at 602 and Temple is 21st at 624.
The final round will be played on Sunday.
