GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Virginia Tech golf team shot a six-over-par 294 and tied for 10^th at the 43rd Annual Furman Intercollegiate on Friday. The event is being played on the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C.

Freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot an even-par 72 and is tied for 23^rd place. He is six shots behind first round leader Sepp Straka of Georgia, who is playing the event as an individual.

Senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) is tied for 30^th place after shooting a 73 on Friday and freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) shot a 74 and is tied for 42^nd place. Junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) shot a 75 and is tied for 59^th place and sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) shot a 77 and is tied for 90^th place.

Three Hokies played the tournament as individuals. Redshirt sophomore Marc MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot an even-par 72 and is tied for 23^rd place. Redshirt sophomore Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.) shot an 80 and is tied for 113^th and freshman Miles Curley (Fort Mill, S.C.) shot an 81 and is tied for 119^th. MacDonald’s 72 was the second-best round among individual competitors in Friday’s first round.

Troy was the only team under par on Friday with a two-under-par 286 and takes a two-stroke lead over Wofford and Francis Marion into the second round. East Tennessee State is fourth at 289, two-time defending champion Clemson is fifth at 290 and Georgia State and Charleston Southern are tied for sixth at 292. Presbyterian and Coastal Carolina are tied for eighth at 293, one stroke ahead of the Hokies, Gardner-Webb, Purdue and Samford. Marshall is 14^th at 295, host Furman is 15^th at 296 and Western Carolina is 16^th at 297. Georgia and Michigan are tied for 17^th at 298, Winthrop is 19^th at 299, Elon is 20^th at 303 and Temple is 21^st at 317.

The second round will be played on Saturday and the final round is Sunday.
