Furman Intercollegiate next up for the Hokies
Tech plays second event of the week

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech golf team will compete in its second event of the week, as they play the 43rd Annual Furman Intercollegiate Friday through Sunday. The tournament will be played at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C.

Junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) will play in the first position for Tech. Moyers placed tied for fourth at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate over the weekend. He was second in scoring in the fall, at 73.71 strokes per round. Moyers has played in every event since coming to Virginia Tech and had his best finish of the fall at the season-opening Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms, where he placed third overall. Freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) will play second for the Hokies at Furman. Cone led the Hokies in Puerto Rico, tying for fourth place. He led the team in scoring in the fall schedule.

Freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) is third for the Hokies. He was third in scoring in the fall and had two top 15 finishes in his first semester in Blacksburg. Sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) will play in the fourth position at Furman and senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) will play fifth for the Hokies. Redmond tied for 15th in the event last season and the Hokies finished third in the team competition last season.

The Hokies will play three players as individuals in the event. Redshirt sophomores Marc MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) and Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.), along with freshman Miles Curley (Rock Hill, S.C.) will tee off unattached in the tournament.

This 21-team event boasts the largest field of any event for Tech this season. Among the top teams playing in the tournament with the Hokies is two-time defending champion Clemson, ranked 14th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Also in the field are No. 22 Georgia and No. 37 Purdue. The Hokies are ranked 60th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings and 52nd in the Golfstat.com rankings.

A number of familiar names have participated in the Furman Intercollegiate through the years. Past winners include Curtis Strange, Jay Haas, Mark Calcavecchia, Billy Andrade, Matt Kuchar and Brad Faxon. Round one of the 54-hole tournament tees off on Friday morning at 8 a.m. with second round play slated for Saturday and final round action scheduled to begin on Sunday morning.
