PINEHURST, N.C. -- The Virginia Tech golf team shot a three-round total of 28-over-par 880 and finished fourth at the 2012 Pinehurst Intercollegiate, presented by Golf Pride on Sunday afternoon. The event was played at the 6,819-yard, par-71 Pinehurst Resort’s George and Tom Fazio-designed No. 6 Course. Tech shot rounds of 294 and 290 in the first two rounds on Saturday and shot a 12-over-par 296 on Sunday.
Junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) tied for fourth place with a three-round total of four-over-par 217. He finished seven strokes behind medalist Michael Kania of Villanova. Moyer shot a three-over-par 73 on Sunday.
Three Hokies, freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.), sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) and senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) tied for 21st place with totals of 222. Freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) tied for 33rd place at 225.
Three Hokies played the tournament as individuals. Freshman Miles Curley (Fort Mill, S.C.) tied for 62nd place at 238. Redshirt sophomore Marc MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) and redshirt sophomore Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.) tied for 64th at 239.
Old Dominion led all three rounds and won the team title with a total of 19-over-par 871, four strokes ahead of Eastern Kentucky. Penn State was third at 876, four strokes ahead of the Hokies. Villanova was fifth at 882, Ball State was sixth at 886, Richmond was seventh at 889 and VCU was eighth at 891. Defending champion UNC Wilmington was ninth at 896, Belmont was 10th at 901, UNC Greensboro was 11th at 902 and Marshall was 12th at 909
The Hokies will return to action on Friday, as they compete in the Furman Intercollegiate. The three-day event will be played at the Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C.
