PINEHURST, N.C. -- The Virginia Tech golf team shot a two-round total of 16-over-par 584 and is in third place at the 2012 Pinehurst Intercollegiate, presented by Golf Pride on Saturday. The event is being played at the 6,819-yard, par-71 Pinehurst Resort’s George and Tom Fazio-designed No. 6 Course. Tech shot a 294 in the morning’s first round and 290 in the second round.
Junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) is tied for fourth place with a two-round total of one-over-par 143. He trails leader Michael Kania of Villanova by six strokes. Moyer’s opening round one-under-par 70 was the Hokies’ low round of the day.
Freshman Trevor Cone, Concord, N.C.) shot 147 and is tied for 17th place. Senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) and sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) are tied for 25th at 148. Freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) is tied for 37th at 151.
Three Hokies are playing the tournament as individuals. Redshirt sophomore Marc MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) is tied with Vincent for 37th place at 151. Freshman Miles Curley (Fort Mill, S.C.) is tied for 52nd place at 155 and redshirt freshman Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.) is tied for 66th at 159.
Old Dominion holds the lead entering the final round with a two-round total of 574, seven strokes ahead of Virginia Commonwealth and 10 strokes ahead of the Hokies. Ball State is fourth at 585, Penn State is fifth at 587, Eastern Kentucky is sixth at 588 and Villanova is seventh at 592. Defending champion UNC Wilmington is eighth at 593, Richmond is ninth at 599, Belmont is 10th at 601, Marshall is 11th at 603 and UNC Greensboro is 12th at 610.
The final round will be played on Sunday.
