BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech golf team will return to action on Saturday and Sunday at the 2012 Pinehurst Intercollegiate, presented by Golf Pride, to be played in Pinehurst, N.C. The event will be played at the 6,990-yard, par-72 Pinehurst Resort’s George and Tom Fazio-designed No. 6 Course.
Freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) will play in the first position for the Hokies at Pinehurst. Cone led the Hokies in Puerto Rico, tying for fourth place. He led the team in scoring in the fall schedule. Junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) will play second for Tech. He was second in scoring in the fall, at 73.71 strokes per round. Moyers has played in every event since coming to Virginia Tech and had his best finish of the fall at the season-opening Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms, where he placed third overall.
Freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) is third for the Hokies. He was third in scoring in the fall and had two top 15 finishes in his first semester in Blacksburg. Sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) will play in the fourth position at Pinehurst and senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) will play fifth for the Hokies.
The Hokies will play three players as individuals in the event. Redshirt sophomores Marc MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) and Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.), along with freshman Miles Curley (Rock Hill, S.C.) will tee off unattached in the tournament.
A 12-team field awaits the Hokies. Ball State, Belmont, Eastern Kentucky, Marshall, Old Dominion, Penn State, UNC Greensboro, Richmond, Villanova, Virginia Commonwealth and defending champion UNC Wilmington will join Tech in the event.
The teams will play practice rounds on Friday, followed by 54 holes on Saturday. The final round will tee off Sunday morning. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
