SAN JUAN, P.R. – The Virginia Tech golf team posted a three-round total of three-over-par 867 and finished tied with top-ranked Texas and Oklahoma for sixth place on Tuesday in the 2012 Puerto Rico Classic. The three-day tournament was played at the Rio Mar Golf Club’s par 72, 6,902-yard River Course in San Juan. The Hokies shot rounds of 288, 287 and 292 for their total of 867.

Freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) tied for fourth place individually with a three-round total of five-under-par 211. Cone finished five strokes behind medalist Justin Thomas of Alabama. Cone’s two-under-par 70 was the Hokies’ best round on Tuesday.

Sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) tied for 31st at 219. Freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) tied for 33rd at 220 and junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) tied for 39th at 222. Senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) tied for 55th at 227.

Alabama led all three rounds and won the event with a total of 30-under-par 834, 18 strokes ahead of Clemson. Host Purdue was third at 856, Georgia Tech was fourth at 861 and NC State was fifth at 863, four strokes ahead of the Hokies, Longhorns and Sooners. Georgia was ninth at 869, Oklahoma State was 10th at 871, Ohio State was 11th at 887 and UNC Greensboro was 12th at 906. North Carolina and Michigan tied for 13th at 915 and East Tennessee State was 15th at 924.

The Puerto Rico Classic annually boasts one of the top fields in collegiate golf. The Hokies finished fifth in last year’s event. The 15-team tournament featured eight teams in the top 50 nationally, according to the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. Three of the nation’s top 10 teams were in the field. The Hokies are currently ranked 61st in Golfweek’s rankings and 55th in the Golfstat.com rankings. Virginia Tech was one of five ACC teams in the event.

The Hokies return to action on March 10 and 11, as they compete in the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. The two-day event will be played at the Pinehurst Country Club’s Course #6 in Pinehurst, N.C.
