SAN JUAN, P.R. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot a second round one-under-par 287 and is in fourth place entering the final round of the 2012 Puerto Rico Classic. The three-day tournament is being played at the Rio Mar Golf Club’s par 72, 6,902-yard River Course in San Juan.
Freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) has a two-round total of three-under-par 141 and is tied for fifth place individually. Cone is five strokes behind second-round leader James White of Georgia Tech.
Sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) is tied for eighth at two-under-par 142. He shot a team-best two-under-par 70 on Monday.
Junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) and freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) are tied for 37th at 148. Senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) is tied for 52nd at 151, after a one-under-par 71 on Monday.
Alabama continues to lead the tournament, following a nine-under-par 279 on Monday. The Crimson Tide leads host Purdue by 13 strokes. Clemson is third at 569, six strokes ahead of the Hokies. Georgia is fifth at 577, Oklahoma is sixth at 578 and Georgia Tech and Oklahoma State are tied for seventh at 579. Top ranked Texas is ninth at 580, NC State is 10th at 584 and Ohio State is 11th at 592. UNC Greensboro is 12th at 602, North Carolina is 13th at 610, Michigan is 14th at 615 and East Tennessee State is 15th at 622.
The final round is set for Tuesday. The Puerto Rico Classic annually boasts one of the top fields in collegiate golf. The Hokies finished fifth in last year’s event. The 15-team tournament features eight teams in the top 50 nationally, according to the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. Three of the nation’s top 10 teams are in the field. The Hokies are currently ranked 61st in Golfweek’s rankings and 55th in the Golfstat.com rankings. Virginia Tech is one of five ACC teams in the event.
