SAN JUAN, P.R. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot an even-par round of 288 on Sunday and the Hokies are tied with top-ranked Texas after the first round of the 2012 Puerto Rico Classic. The three-day tournament is being played at the Rio Mar Golf Club’s par 72, 6,902-yard River Course in San Juan.
Freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) shot an opening round, two-under-par 70 and is tied for sixth place individually. Cone is three strokes behind first-round leader Justin Thomas of Alabama.
Sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) is tied for 21st at even-par 72. Junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) and freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) are tied for 30th at 73. Senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) is tied for 68th at 80.
Alabama jumped out to a big lead on day one. The Crimson Tide shot a 12-under-par 276 and lead second place Clemson by seven strokes. Oklahoma is third at 284, four strokes ahead of the Hokies and Longhorns. Georgia and host Purdue are tied for sixth at 289, Georgia Tech is eighth at 290, NC State is ninth at 292 and Oklahoma State is 10th at 294. UNC Greensboro is 11th at 296, North Carolina is 12th at 302, Ohio State is 13th at 303 and East Tennessee State and Michigan are tied for 14th at 306.
The second round will be played on Monday and the final round is set for Tuesday. The Puerto Rico Classic annually boasts one of the top fields in collegiate golf. The Hokies finished fifth in last year’s event.
The 15-team tournament features eight teams in the top 50 nationally, according to the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. Three of the nation’s top 10 teams are in the field. The Hokies are currently ranked 61st in Golfweek’s rankings and 55th in the Golfstat.com rankings. Virginia Tech is one of five ACC teams in the event.
