Hokies open spring slate in Puerto Rico
Annual trip to the island features outstanding field

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech golf team will open its Spring 2012 schedule of tournaments on Sunday at the 2012 Puerto Rico Classic men’s golf tournament, to be played in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico The event will be played Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at the 6,902-yard, par-72 Rio Mar Country Club’s River Course.

Junior Mike Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) will play in the first position for the Hokies. He was second in scoring in the fall, at 73.71 strokes per round. Moyers has played in every event since coming to Virginia Tech and had his best finish of the fall at the season-opening Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms, where he placed third overall.

Freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) will play in the second position for this tournament. He led the Hokies in scoring during the fall. Fellow freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) will play third for Tech. He was third in scoring in the fall and had two top 15 finishes in his first semester in Blacksburg. Sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) is in the line-up at No. 4 and senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) will play fifth for the Hokies.

Boasting one of the strongest fields in collegiate golf this spring, the 15-team tournament features eight teams in the top 50 nationally, according to the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. Three of the nation’s top 10 teams, including No. 1 Texas, are in the field. The Hokies are currently ranked 61st in Golfweek’s rankings and 55th in the Golfstat.com rankings. The two top individual players in Golfweek’s rankings, Jordan Spieth and Dylan Frittelli, both of Texas, will compete in Puerto Rico.

Virginia Tech is one of five ACC teams in the event. Other teams competing, along with the Hokies and Longhorns are host Purdue, defending champion Alabama, Clemson, East Tennessee State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Michigan, North Carolina, NC State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and UNC Greensboro.

The teams will play practice rounds on Saturday.
