JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot three-day total of 910 and finished in 11th place at the 14th annual Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club on Sunday afternoon. The three-day tournament was played at the par-72, 7,147-yard Blackthorn Club at The Ridges golf course. The Hokies shot 310 on Friday, followed by a 307 on Saturday, before improving to a 293 in Sunday’s final round.
Freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) shot an even-par 216 and tied with Corey Conners of Kent State and Jonathan Fly of Memphis for third place. The trio finished two strokes behind co-medalists Mark McMillen of NC State and Jace Long of Missouri.
These were the only five golfers at par-or-better for the tournament. Cone’s third place finish is his best-ever collegiate finish and is tied for the Hokies’ best individual finish of the year, along with Mikey Moyers’ tie for third at the season-opening Northern Intercollegiate.
Junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) shot a 229 and tied for 46th place and sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) shot a 231 and tied for 56th place. Freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot 239 and tied for 68th place and redshirt sophomore Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.) tied for 74th place with a 242.
Freshman Miles Curley (Rock Hill, S.C.) played the event as an individual and finished with a 234 and tied for 64th place. That was tied for the second-best score among the seven individuals competing in the tournament.
Kent State shot the best round of the tournament, a 10-under-par 278, on Sunday and won the team title with a five-over-par 869, seven strokes ahead of runner-up Virginia. Wake Forest was third a 879, NC State was fourth at 882, Memphis was fifth at 885 and Clemson was sixth at 886. Missouri was seventh at 891, UNC Wilmington was eighth at 892, host East Tennessee State was ninth at 894 and Tennessee was 10th at 897, 13 strokes ahead of the Hokies. Villanova and Louisville tied for 12th at 912, Toledo was 14th at 916 and Army was 15th at 958.
The Hokies will conclude the fall portion of its schedule on Oct. 29-30 at the UNCG Bridgestone Invitational at the Forest Oaks Golf Club in Greensboro, N.C.
