BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot an opening round 310 and are tied with Villanova for 11th place at the 14th annual Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club on Friday afternoon. The three-day tournament is being played at the par-72, 7,147-yard Blackthorn Club at The Ridges golf course.
Freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) shot a four-over-par 74 and is tied for 15th place. Cone is six strokes behind leader Mark McMillen of NC State. Only four of the 82 golfers in the tournament recorded scores under par in the first round.
Freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot 77 and is tied for 41st place and junior Mikey Moyers Stanardsville, Va.) shot a 78 and is tied for 50th place. Redshirt sophomore Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.) shot an 81 and is tied for 68th place and sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) shot 82 and is tied for 74th place. Freshman Miles Curley (Rock Hill, S.C.) is playing the event as an individual. He shot a 77 and is tied for 41st place.
NC State is the only team under par after the first round. The Wolfpack shot a one-under-par 287 and leads Virginia by eight strokes. Missouri and UNC Wilmington are tied for third at 296, Tennessee and Memphis are tied for fifth at 298 and Kent State and Louisville are tied for seventh at 303. Wake Forest is ninth at 304 and Toledo is 10th at 308, two strokes ahead of the Hokies and Wildcats. Host East Tennessee State and Army are tied for 13th at 313 and Clemson is 15th at 315.
The second round will be played on Saturday and the final round will be played on Sunday.
