MACON, Ga. – The Virginia Tech golf team recorded a three-round total of 881 and finished in fifth place in the 2011 Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship on Sunday afternoon. The three-day tournament is being played at the par-72, 7,175-yard Brickyard at Riverside golf course. The Hokies shot a 290 in Sunday’s final round after a 297 on Friday and a 294 on Saturday.
Sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) shot a three-day total of one-under-par 215 and tied for ninth place. He finished 10 strokes behind medalist Brooks Koepka of Florida State. Chalkley’s ninth place is his best finish as a collegiate player. On Sunday, Chalkley was originially listed as tied for eighth, but a scoring error, unrelated to Chalkley's final score, was found on Monday morning and his final place was a tie for ninth.
Freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot a 221 and tied for 31st place and freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) finished in a tie for 36th place at 222. Junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) shot 225 and tied for 50th place and senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land. Texas) shot 235 and tied for 72nd place. Vincent shot a one-under-par 71 on Sunday, good for Tech’s low round of the day.
Georgia Tech lead all three rounds and won the event with a three-round total of 16-under-par 848, 17 strokes ahead of Florida State. North Florida was third at 868 and Georgia was fourth at 872, nine strokes ahead of the Hokies. Chattanooga was sixth at 885, Texas-Arlington was seventh at 887 and Oklahoma and host Mercer were tied for eighth at 890. Mississippi was 10th at 892, Colorado State was 11th at 894, Augusta State was 12th at 896, the College of Charleston was 13th at 898, Gonzaga was 14th at 912 and Air Force was 15th at 914.
The Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship once again boasted one of the top fields in the fall season of collegiate golf. With their fifth place finish, the Hokies defeated four teams ranked in the top 50 of the Golfstat.com rankings, plus two-time defending national champion Augusta State.
Tech returns to action Oct. 14-16 at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Blackthorn Club in Johnson City, Tenn.
