MACON, Ga. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot an opening round 297 and is tied with Mississippi for seventh place in the 2011 Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship on Friday. The three-day tournament is being played at the par-72, 7,175-yard Brickyard at Riverside golf course.
Freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot a first round one-under-par 71 and is tied for 12th place individually. He is six strokes behind Seth Reeves of Georgia Tech.
Sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) shot a 74 and is tied for 34th place. Junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) and freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) each shot 76 and are tied for 47th place, while senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) shot 79 and is tied for 69th place.
Georgia Tech shot an opening round eight-under-par 280 and leads second place Florida State by two strokes. North Florida is third at 284, two-time defending national champion Augusta State is fourth at 292, Georgia is fifth at 295 and Chattanooga is sixth at 296, one stroke ahead of the Hokies and Rebels. Texas-Arlington is ninth at 298, host Mercer is ninth at 299 and Gonzaga and Colorado State are tied for 11th at 300. Oklahoma is 13th at 301, the College of Charlestion is 14th at 303 and Air Force is 15th at 307.
The second round will be played on Saturday morning and the final round will be played Sunday. Live scoring will be available at:
