BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech golf team will travel to Macon, Ga., to compete in the 2011 Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship. The three-day tournament begins on Friday at the par-72, 7,175-yard Brickyard at Riverside golf course.
Junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) leads the Hokies into the event. Moyers had third-place finish at the season-opening Northern Intercollegiate and leads the Hokies in scoring average this season.
A pair of freshmen, Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) and Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) once again man the second and third spots for the Hokies. Vincent has a pair of top 20 finishes in his first two collegiate events, including an 11th place finish last week at the VCU Shootout. Cone is third on the team in scoring and has a 20th and 21st place finish in his first two events.
Senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) and sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) will play in the final two spots for Tech. Both players had strong springs for the Hokies and Chalkley competed in the 2011 U.S. Amateur in Erin, Wisc., in August.
This year’s field at the Brickyard continues the tradition of outstanding competition. Two-time defending national champion Augusta State headlines the field, that also includes No. 12 Chattanooga, No. 15 Florida State, No. 21 Georgia Tech and No. 22 and defending Brickyard champion, Georgia. In all, seven of the 15 teams are ranked in the top 50 of the Golfstat.com rankings. The Hokies are ranked 42nd in the Golfstat.com rankings and 35th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.
The tournament will feature 18 holes of action on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The teams will play practice rounds on Thursday. Live scoring will be available at:
