Hokies to compete at VCU Shootout
Eight golfers to play at Hermitage Country Club

BLACKBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech golf team will travel all eight team members to compete in the VCU Shootout at the par 72, 6,955-yard Hermitage Country Club’s Manakin Course on Monday and Tuesday.

Junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) leads the Hokies into the event. Moyers tied for third at the season-opening Northern Intercollegiate. He led the Hokies in scoring in four events last season, including the first two of the fall and three of the five fall tournaments. Moyers tied for 17th at VCU last year.

A pair of freshmen, Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) and Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) will man the second and third spots for the Hokies. Both placed in the top 20 at the Northern Intercollegiate to begin their collegiate careers. Vincent won the 2011 Valentine Invitational at the Hermitage Country Club in August by five strokes. In that event, he set a new competitive course record of eight-under-par 64 for the Manakin Course. Cone tied for 11th in the event.

Senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) will play in the fourth position for the Hokies . Redmond was Tech’s top finisher in both the 2011 ACC Men’s Golf Championship and the 2011 NCAA Virginia Tech Regional in May. Sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) will play in the fifth spot for Tech. Redmond was tied for fourth in the Valentine, while Chalkley did not play the tournament as he was competing in the 2011 U.S. Amateur in Erin, Wisc.

Tech will play three golfers as individuals in the event. Redshirt sophomore Marc MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe), redshirt sophomore Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and freshman Miles Curley (Rock Hill, S.C.) will tee it up for the Hokies. This will be all three golfers’ first appearances of the season and Curley is making his collegiate debut in the tournament.

The Hokies finished eighth in last year’s event and tied for fourth the year before. All eight players have played competitive rounds on the Manakin Course. Tech is one of five ACC teams competing in this event, along with Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest. Other than the five ACC teams and host VCU, the other teams competing at Hermitage are Charlotte, ECU, Iowa State, James Madison, Richmond, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, ODU and Wichita State.

The tournament will begin at 8:45 a.m. on Monday morning with a shotgun start. The second round to follow that afternoon. The final round will take place on Tuesday. Live scoring will be available at:
