INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Virginia Tech golf team has received an at-large bid to the 2011 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. The Hokies will compete May 19-21 as the seventh seed at the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech. The Hokies are the host for the regional.

This will be the Hokies’ fifth consecutive NCAA appearance and their 13th all-time appearance in the NCAA Championship. Tech was the 11th seed in the Central Regional last season and finished 10th in the event at Warren Golf Course in Notre Dame, Indiana.

“It is an honor to represent Virginia Tech in the NCAA Championship and we are excited to host the East Regional at the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech,” head coach Jay Hardwick said. “The fact that we have received an at-large bid once again and will be competing at our home venue in front of all our Hokie fans is a real plus. This opportunity is a testament to the hard work and dedication this team has shown throughout the season. It is also a tribute to the strength of golf in the ACC that eight of the 11 teams were selected for post-season play.”

Virginia Tech finished in the top eight in all 10 events this season, including three top three finishes. The Hokies enter the regionals ranked 39th nationally by Golfstat.com and 42nd nationally by the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.

Virginia Tech is one of eight Atlantic Coast Conference teams in the regionals and one of four ACC teams competing at the River Course. Tech finished seventh in the 2011 ACC Men’s Golf Championship in April.

The Hokies are familiar with Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech, as it serves as the team’s home course. This will be the first tournament that the Hokies have played on this course, which was redesigned by renowned golf designer Pete Dye and reopened for play in August of 2005. The Hokies hosted the 1997 NCAA East Regional and the 2004 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship at the Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, Virginia.

ACC Champion Georgia Tech is the number-one seed at Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech, followed by LSU, Duke, Virginia and Oklahoma. The rest of the field is Kent State, Mississippi, East Carolina, UNC Wilmington, Coastal Carolina, Lamar and Yale. There will also be 10 individuals competing at this site.

There are six regional sites. Three sites, including this site, have 13 teams and 10 individuals, while the other three sites have 14 teams and five individuals. The top five teams from each site advance to the NCAA Championship, along with the low individual from each site not on an advancing team. The championship rounds will be played at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla., May 31-June 5.
