Hokies ninth after first round of ACC Championship

NEW LONDON, N.C. – Virginia Tech shot an opening round 11-over-par 299 and is in ninth place at the 58th Annual ACC Golf Championship at the par 72, 7,102 yard Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point in New London, N.C. on Friday.

Junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) shot an even-par 72 to lead the Hokies and is tied for 11th place overall. He trails co-leaders Paul Haley and Kyle Scott of Georgia Tech by four strokes.

Sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) shot a 74 is tied for 20th place and senior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) shot a 76 and is tied for 35th. Freshman Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) shot a 77 and is tied for 41st place and senior Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) shot 78th and is tied for 45th.

Defending champion Georgia Tech shot a seven-under-par 281 and leads second place Duke by eight strokes. Clemson is third at 290, Wake Forest is fourth at 293 and Florida State is fifth at 294, Virginia and NC State are tied for sixth at 295 and North Carolina is eighth at 297, two strokes ahead of the Hokies. Maryland is 10th at 304 and Boston College is 11th at 314.

The second round will be played on Saturday and the final round will be played on Sunday.
