AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot a three-round total of 882 and finished in eighth place at Insperity Augusta State Invitational, at the par-72, 7,231-yard Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. on Sunday. The Hokies shot a two-over-par 290 in Sunday’s final round, after shooting rounds of 300 and 292 on Saturday.
Sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanrdsville, Virginia) tied for 25th place with a total of two-over-par 218. He finished 13 strokes behind medalist Kevin Tway of Oklahoma State. Moyer’s shot a two-under-par 70 on Sunday.
Junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) tied for 36th place at 221. Senior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) and freshman Bryce Chalkey (Richmond, Virginia) tied for 54th place at 224 and senior Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) tied for 60th place at 225. Three Hokies recorded rounds of par-or-better on Sunday after just one such round in the two rounds on Saturday.
Tway birdied each of the final two holes on Sunday and top-ranked Oklahoma State defeated Tennessee for the team title by one stroke. The Cowboys finished at 16-under-par 848 and the Vols were 849, 10 strokes ahead of third place Clemson. Alabama was fourth at 863, UCLA was fifth at 866 and host Augusta State was sixth at 871. Illinois finished in seventh place at 877, five strokes ahead of the Hokies. Coastal Carolina was ninth at 883, South Carolina was 10th at 887 and Georgia Southern and Lamar tied for 11th at 892. Washington was 13th at 897, Houston was 14th at 904, USC Aiken was 15th at 913 and Georgia State was 16th at 914. On the golfstat.com scoreboard, Augusta State’s “B” team is listed as the fifth place team, but NCAA rules allow for just one counting team per school, although the ASU “B” team’s individuals do count in the final results. The ASU “B” team actually finished ahead of the ASU “A” team.
The top three teams in the nation and five of the top 10 teams competed in the tournament this weekend. Defending national champion and ninth-ranked Augusta State hosted the event. Virginia Tech, ranked 42nd in the golfstat.com rankings, is one of 10 top 50 teams in the field. Five of the top 10 individuals in the nation were in the field at Augusta State.
The Hokies will return to action on April 22-24, as they will compete in the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championship at the The Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point in New London, N.C.
