GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot an opening round, three-under-par 285 and is in second place at 42nd Annual Furman Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C. on Friday.

Senior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) shot a three-under-par 69 in the first round and is tied for fourth place. He trails leader William Sjaichudin of Purdue by four strokes.

Senior Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) and sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) each shot one-under-par 71s and are tied for 11^th. Junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) shot 74 and is tied for 28^nd place and freshman Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) shot 76 and is tied for 52^nd place. Redshirt freshman Mar MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) is playing the tournament as an individual and shot a 78 and is tied for 77^th place.

Kennesaw State holds the lead after the first round, at six-under-par, 282, three strokes ahead of the Hokies. Clemson is third at 287, East Carolina is fourth at 288, Gardner-Webb is fifth at 293 and Purdue is sixth at 294. Winthrop and host Furman are tied for seventh at 296, Chattanooga, Charleston Southern and UNC Wilmington are tied for ninth at 303 and Marshall and Davidson are tied for 12^th at 304. Troy and Wofford are tied for 14^th at 305, Francis Marion, Western Carolina, Elon and Presbyterian are tied for 16^th at 307, Samford is 20^that 308, Louisville is 21^st at 309 and Temple is 22^nd at 318.
