PINEHURST, N.C. – Virginia Tech shot a three-round total of 27-over-par 879 and finished second to UNC Wilmington in the Pinehurst Intercollegiate by Gatorade on Sunday afternoon. The event was played at the 6,880-yard, par-71, Tom Fazio-designed The Club at Pinehurst No. 6. Tech shot rounds of 297, 289 and 293 in the tournament.
Junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) shot a final round two-under-par 69 and finished in fifth place with a three-day total of two-over-par 215. Josh Brock of UNC Wilmington and Matt Ball Jr., of VCU tied for medalist honors at 212.
Senior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) and sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) tied for 16th place at 221. Senior Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) tied for 22nd at 222 and freshman Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) tied for 61st at 233. Redshirt freshman Marc MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) played the event as an individual and 77th at 240.
Tech finished six strokes behind the Seahawks, who shot a 21-over-par 873. VCU and Penn State tied for third place at 882, UNC Greensboro was fifth at 886 and Michigan State was sixth at 891. Richmond finished seventh at 893, Radford was eighth at 896, Eastern Michigan was ninth at 900 and Marshall and Xavier tied for 10th at 902. Old Dominion was 12th at 909, Belmont was 13th at 919, Francis Marion was 14th at 921, Eastern Kentucky was 15th at 941 and Western Illinois was 16th at 942.
The Hokies return to action on Friday at the Furman Invitational at the Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, South Carolina. The three-day event concludes next Sunday.
