Hokies improve to second at Pinehurst
Moyers tied for sixth individually

PINEHURST, N.C. – Virginia Tech shot a second round five-over-par 289 and moved up into second place at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate by Gatorade on Saturday. The tournament is being played at the 6,880-yard, par-71, Tom Fazio-designed The Club at Pinehurst No. 6. Tech entered the day tied for fifth place, but the Hokies fired the second-best round of the day and moved up to within a stroke of the lead.

Sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) is tied for sixth overall, at two-over-par 144. He trails leader Casey Olsen of Eastern Michigan by three strokes entering Sunday’s final round.

Junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) is tied for 10th place at 146 and senior Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) is tied for 15th at 147. Senior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) is tied for 26th at 149 and freshman Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) is tied for 50th at 153.

Redshirt freshman Marc MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) is playing the event as an individual and is tied for 68th place at 158. Senior Aaron Eckstein (Salem, Virginia) was scheduled to compete in the event, but had a recurrence of a nerve injury in his left arm during Thursday’s practice round and was forced to withdraw prior to the start of the tournament.

The Hokies have a two-round total of 18-over-par 586 and trail UNC Wilmington by just one stroke entering the final round. Michigan State is third at 590, VCU is fourth at 591 and Penn State and Eastern Michigan are tied for fifth at 594. UNC Greensboro is in seventh place at 595, Richmond is eighth at 597, Marshall is in ninth at 600 and Old Dominion is in 10th at 601. Radford is 11th at 606, Xavier is 12th at 609, Francis Marion is 13th at 611, Belmont is 14th at 614, Western Illinois is 15th at 629 and Eastern Kentucky is 16th at 638.
