Hokies tied for fifth after first round at Pinehurst

PINEHURST, N.C. – Virginia Tech shot an opening round 13-over-par 297 and is tied for fifth place at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate by Gatorade on Friday. The tournament, under blustery conditions on Friday, is being played at the 6,880-yard, par-71, Tom Fazio-designed The Club at Pinehurst No. 6.

Sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) is tied for second overall, following a one-under-par 70. He trails leader Brian Churchill-Smith of Eastern Michigan by one stroke.

Junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) is tied for 24th place at 74 and senior Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) is tied for 40th at 76. Senior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) is tied for 47th at 77 and freshman Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) is tied for 57th at 78.

Eastern Michigan leads the tournament at seven-over-par 291, two strokes ahead of Michigan State and Penn State. Richmond is fourth at 295, two strokes ahead of the Hokies, UNC Greensboro and VCU. ODU is eighth at 298, Marshall and Radford are tied for ninth at 300 and UNC Wilmington is 11th at 301. Xavier is 12th at 303, Francis Marion is 13th at 307, Eastern Kentucky is 14th at 309, Belmont is 15th at 312 and Western Illinois is 16th at 315.
