RIO GRANDE, P.R. – Virginia Tech shot a three-round total of one-under-par 863 and finished in fifth place in the Puerto Rico Classic on Tuesday afternoon. The event was played at the 6,902-yard, par-72 Rio Mar Country Club’s River Course. Tech shot a final round two-over-par 290.
Senior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) shot finished tied for fourth place with a three-round total of seven-under-par 209, following a final round three-under-par 69 on Tuesday. Bailey was sub-par in all three round in the event. James White of Georgia Tech won medalist honors at 206, three strokes ahead of Bailey.
Senior Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) tied for 13th place at two-under-par 214 and junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) tied for 35th at 219. Freshman Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) finished in 48th place at 222 and sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) finished tied for 57th at 224.
Alabama won the tournament at 28-under-par 836, five strokes ahead of runner-up Georgia Tech. Top-ranked Oklahoma State was third at 847 and Georgia was fourth at 858, five strokes ahead of the Hokies. Oklahoma finished sixth at 864, Texas was seventh at 867, NC State was eighth at 871, Clemson was ninth at 873 and Ohio State was 10th at 875. Host Purdue finished 11th at 889, Michigan was 12th at 888, Northwestern was 13th at 889, UNC Greensboro was 14th at 890 and East Tennessee State was 15th at 893.
The 15-team tournament, which annually has one of collegiate golf’s top fields, featured 12 teams in the top 50 nationally, according to the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. Three of the nation’s top five teams, including the No. 1 Cowboys, are in the field. The Hokies are currently ranked 53rd in Golfweek’s rankings.
Tech returns to action on Friday, March 11, as they compete in the Pinehurst Intercollegiate at the Pinehurst Country Club’s #6 Course in Pinehurst, N.C. The Pinehurst Intercollegiate will be play Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 11-13.
