RIO GRANDE, P.R. – Virginia Tech shot an opening round two-under-par 286 and is in fourth place in the Puerto Rico Classic on Sunday. The event is being played at the 6,902-yard, par-72 Rio Mar Country Club’s River Course.

Senior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) shot a three-under-par 69 and is tied for the tournament lead with seven other golfers, including defending champion Kevin Tway of Oklahoma State.

Senior Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) is tied for ninth place at 70 and junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) is tied for 28^th at even-par 72. Freshman Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) is tied for 56^th at 75 and sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) is tied for 62^nd at 76.

Georgia Tech leads the tournament after a first round 10-under-par 278, three strokes better than Alabama. No. 1 Oklahoma State is third at 283, three strokes ahead of the Hokies. Oklahoma is fifth at 287, NC State is sixth at 288 and Georgia, Northwestern and host Purdue are tied for seventh at 289. Clemson is 10^th at 290, Texas is 11^th at 292 and East Tennessee State and UNC Greensboro are tied for 12^th at 294. Ohio State is 14^th at 295 and Michigan is 15^th at 300.

The 15-team tournament, which annually has one of collegiate golf’s top fields, features 12 teams in the top 50 nationally, according to the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. Three of the nation’s top five teams, including the No. 1 Cowboys, are in the field. The Hokies are currently ranked 53rd in Golfweek’s rankings.

The second round will be played Monday and the final round will be played on Tuesday.
